(October 07)
(part of Los Niños de
Guernica)
Eastleigh Borough
Council commemorated the evacuation of 4000 basque refugees to
Eastleigh with a week long arts event featuring film, theatre,
dance and exhibition.
A specially
commissioned play Javier, Maria and Me told the story of
the extraordinary evacuation through the eyes of three
children.

Three ex local
college students from Barton Peveril and Eastleigh College were
successful in the audition process to gain the roles of the main
charachters and proceeded to tour the borough bringing the
local history story alive to over 700 borough primary school
children.
Feedback
from audience members throughout the week and children
involved with workshops was extremely positive.
'Local history to our children, nice to
bring history to them and our area.'

'Absolutely wonderful -the combination of the two
(Javier, Maria and Me and Lila Dance) was so good. I feel
so strongly that the play and dance should be shown in other areas
of the country where Niños were sent to
live'
