Frozen Motion
An exhibition of dance images
by Southampton photographer
James Rowbotham

Recently retired from a career in the
international oil and gas business James is now concentrating on
dance photography and is delighted to present his first exhibition
in The Point's gallery. James's interest in dance photography began
when shooting an outdoor tango display in Buenos Aires and with his
work now spanning a range of styles including street and
contemporary dance ballet and of course, Argentinean tango he has
created a substantial portfolio of images taken in theatres,
studios and at outdoor performances.
Writing about his exhibition James says
"Whilst talented dancers make wonderful subjects, capturing
often fast moving subjects challenges the conventional technology.
I learned the techniques of freezing motion at a workshop in New
York City, working with the celebrated dance photographer Lois
Greenfield. Wherever possible i use special studio equipment
capable of delivering an exceptionally short flash duration, this
can stop motion quite dead. I use a long lens, set the camera low
in a fixed position and shoot straight into my laptop, so that
everyone can immediately see the results."
