Fascinatin’ Rhythm
Tuesday 17th June at
7.00pm
Certificate: U
Duration: 55 minutes
When most
people think of tap, they think nostalgia: old Hollywood movies,
chorus lines, lavish sets and memorable music. They think
Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Shirley Temple and Gene Kelly.
Today, many people think that tap has died. But the real tap has
evolved into something it has never been before. Its roots are
enveloped in a racist past, but it has still risen above its
history to become a complex and multi-faceted art form. It is
one of the most exciting, complex, sophisticated and expressive art
forms to have emerged from the 20th century. First screened on the
BBC in 2001, this film includes great performances and
interviewees, unfolds the story of tap dancing and encompasses more
than a century and a half of large scale social change.
Introduced by the film’s director and producer
Ian Leese who will also be available for a short Q&A following
the screening.
